History of Mireside

Garden at Mireside

Mireside from the garden

The building dates back to the late 17th Century and is a typical Lakeland farmhouse with the original house being extended on two occasions. The farm has been in our family since February 1801 when William Slater purchased "the Messuages, cottages. barns, stables, cowhouses gardens orchards, seventy acres of land, twenty acres of meadow and twenty acres of pasture" for one hundred and twenty pounds. The Slaters built Parkergate and High Side and have a long history in the village. evidenced by the headstones in St Bega's church. The family tree has been traced by distant relatives in Canada and in July 2000 there was a 'Slater reunion' with some 30 relatives returning from Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the U.S.

More recently, from 1938 the farm was occupied by a tenant, John Mackereth, until he passed away in 1995. The family still farm surrounding fields.

Mireside was completely renovated in 1997. Whilst it retains the charm of a Grade One Listed Building, the house benefits from all modern amenities including oil fired central heating, a high pressure water system, wireless broadband, digital TVs, modern furnishings and a well equipped kitchen. We spend as much time as we can at Mireside and try to maintain it to a high standard so that it is very much our 'home from home'. 'Mireside' consists of the house, a large garden with a small stream, a number of traditional barns in a cobbled farmyard and four fields totalling 18 acres which are let to a local farmer for grazing. When staying at Mireside you will enjoy exclusive use of the house and garden and the only disturbance should be the animals, the farmer tending them and the occasional walker. It is a beautiful setting.
